I knew I was a n00b when it came to World of Warcraft, but I did not know just to what extent. I went to the Beginner's Guide to read what the game was all about. It is viewed as a Massive Multiplayer, which allows thousands to play the game. Each character has traits and specialties, strengths and weaknesses. The amount of immersion is varied; you can have huge histories or not at all.
The basis of the game revolves around fighting monsters and going on various quests. There seems to be so much information and support for the game. On the official website there are several community forums, not including all the other hits I got on Google by fans of the game. It is almost overwhelming the wealth of information and knowledge about the game. It really feels like its own universe.
This is a good starting point. I'm interested to see what race you choose etc. Meanwhile, my eldest is just getting into Dungeons and Dragons and creating his little world and characters on paper. As I follow that, it will be interesting for me to compare to what you find.
